Wall to Wall Meetings with no time to think

Ever had one of those days? Solid meetings from dawn till dusk!

And while you are at all these meetings, your inbox is filling, the phone is ringing, and work is piling up. The pressure’s building.

If there was ever a time when you needed focus, creativity and a clear head, it’s on days like these. But most of us try and cope by multi-tasking, switching from one thing to another, desperately trying to get a few things done.

We know the brain isn’t good at task switching. Researchers at UC Irvine found that it takes an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds after an interruption to get back on track with the original task.

But that’s only part of the story.

Solving tough problems, thinking critically, putting together ideas, developing a strategy all require concentrated time and focus. There’s nothing worse than facing a cognitively demanding day at work without the benefit of your full attention. Rushing from meeting to meeting makes it almost impossible to give anything your full attention.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could relax a bit and get into that state of flow where there are no distractions, and you can experience the rush of pushing yourself and tackling the tough challenges with all your mental resources firing.

Well, instead of having days full of meetings, why not have days full of thinking. Call the Think Days. This only allows everyone to spend uninterrupted time on one of their most important responsibilities—thinking. It’s called Deep Work.

How much time are you are spending on deep work? How about your employees? Try the gift of a meeting less day, and see what a difference it makes. Your brain will thank you!
