Gain control over your social networking activities using the Whole Brain Model – Ann Herrmann explains how

There has been an explosion in social networking activity over the past few years, outweighed only by the ever-increasing numbers of people using email. With mobile devices making information and people accessible 24 hours a day, anywhere in the world, we’re more connected than ever, and that’s bringing many positives to our lives.

But this rise in social networking and mobile connectedness has also led to a phenomenon of continuous partial attention, and many of us find ourselves struggling to balance the mental energy needed to concentrate on one aspect of information and the ability to put attention towards memory and new learning. Managing your attention is critical to ensure you get the most out of social networking.

By using the Whole Brain® Model as a way to organise, understand and manage your attention, you can gain control over your social networking activities:

Step 1: ANALYSE: Go to the A (Blue) Quadrant and determine where you are today in social networking activity. What activities are you involved in, and how much of your time is spent on these activities? How much of your productivity is consumed by them?

Step 2: PERSONALISE: Go to the C (Red) Quadrant and ask yourself, Who are you interested in connecting with, for both personal and professional reasons? How does it make you feel to connect with old friends or make new friends? Where can you find people with shared interests? How can you have fun with it?

Step 3: STRATEGISE: Go to the D (Yellow) Quadrant and ask, Why are you interested in social networking? What can you discover and learn? How can it stimulate your thinking or just give you a mental break? Think of all the positives you can get out of it.

Step 4: ORGANISE: Go to the B (Green) Quadrant and determine how much time you can devote to social networking and how you will manage it. What will you decide NOT to do in order to make time for these activities? When and how often will you engage in social networking? What sites will you go to?
