Comparing Assessments? The Answers Lie in the Premise
If you are a Herrmann Certified Practitioner you have probably been asked about the similarities and differences between the HBDI® and other assessments, whether or not it can be used in conjunction with other tools and will it confuse people if you use an additional assessment?
In this article we answer those questions, starting with a background on the different assessment premises, the similarities and differences between the assessments, and how you can respond to typical questions about the HBDI® in comparison to other assessments.

Reboot your brain by taking a nap…at work!
Progressive companies like Google encourage employees to recharge their brains by sleeping at work. Why? Well, numerous studies have shown that sleep boosts memory and learning. But perhaps of greater significance to business is a report in the June 2009 Proceedings of the National Academy of Science which shows that REM sleep improves people’s ability for creative problem solving.
Robert Stickgold, associate professor of psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in Boston and in the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, has found evidence that important memory processing occurs as you fall asleep. During this hypnologic phase of sleep, your brain tags memories of unresolved problems, essentially marking them for future processing.
He says: “Naps can help people separate the gist of new information from extraneous details. Catching some REM sleep makes people better at finding connections between weakly related words – a good indication that napping gets the creative juices flowing.”
In a recent New Zealand study, air traffic controllers scored much higher on alertness and performance tests if they had taken a 40 minute nap during the night shift.
As little as six minutes of sleep can make a difference to productivity. If you memorise a list of words then take a nap, you’ll remember more words than you would without sleeping first.
In a knowledge-based economy such as ours, an astute mind is instrumental to success – so take a few minutes out of your busy day to sleep and encourage your employees to do the same!

Alliance partners add extra dimension to HINZ’s client offerings
Herrmann International New Zealand (HINZ) works closely with a number of alliance partners whose specialist knowledge and industry experience enables us to provide our clients with targeted application of Whole Brain® thinking.
Carel Redelinghuys of GtG consulting promotes transforming businesses from good to great – hence the acronym GtG. He developed our Whole Brain® Project Manager workshop and specialises in applying Whole Brain® thinking in a project environment. Carel is committed to helping teams and organisations increase their effectiveness in developing and implementing organisational strategies.
Carel explains why he is passionate about working with HBDI™: “HBDI™ is an excellent platform for establishing rapport and connecting with people. It offers an insight into human behaviour and explains why people make certain choices. Moreover, the information is accessible and easily digestible”
Of great interest to Carel is the brain and how it functions. In addition to being a Herrmann™ Certified Practitioner, Carel is a Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) practitioner and uses a combination of HBDI™ and NLP to increase a person’s effectiveness at work through personal coaching.
Carel has more than 15 years experience – both local and international – operating in senior management and executive leadership positions, in which he successfully delivered numerous projects including merger integration, corporate turnaround, restructuring, right sizing and cost optimisation exercises.
With a Business Management degree from University Brunel (UK) and an MBA in Strategic Change and Project Management from Henley Management College in the UK, Carel has the qualifications to support his extensive work experience.
Carel’s innovative style and extensive knowledge of technology and organisational behaviour enable him to help companies enhance value creation.
Outside of work, Carel enjoys fishing and cooking – his obsession with food experimentation has lead to his wife banning him from buying any more cookbooks! As a big ‘yellow’, Carel uses his extensive cookbook collection for inspiration rather than following recipes.
Herrmann International New Zealand promotes Carel in all aspects of HBDI® from Fundamentals to Transformation.
