Highlights this month:

The Key to Successful Learning Programs

In the June 2010 issue of Chief Learning Officer Magazine, Ann Herrmann-Nehdi discusses the role learning style models play in improving learning effectiveness and outcomes. The article highlights IBM’s success in accelerating leadership development by integrating the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument® (HBDI®) and Whole Brain® Model into its global new leader development program.

The article also outlines a process that senior learning, talent management and organisational development professionals can apply to ensure training and communications initiatives are designed with learning and thinking styles in mind.

30 Years of Whole Brain Thinking at work

1981 was a year of many notable launches. From IBM’s introduction of MS-DOS to 3M’s release of the Post-It Note and the very first mention of something called the INTERNET. The advances that occurred in 1981 are still evident in today’s workplace.

1981 also marked another introduction to the modern workplace: It was the year that Ned Herrmann, founder of Herrmann International, brought the Whole Brain® Model and the HBDI® to organisations around the world. These were tools he developed from research conducted while he led Management Education at General Electric.

Before blogs, Twitter, Facebook and email, printed newspapers were the most popular way to find out the latest news! The Whole Brain® Herald (below) was a "newspaper" created for Dupont in 1987 as part of the implementation of the Applied Creative Thinking program. This issue also includes an article from Ned Herrmann on skunkworks: "Turning on Innovation in a Corporate Setting."

As we lead up to the 30th anniversary of Herrmann next year, we’ll be sharing memories, mementos and a glimpse into the historical archives of Herrmann International, the HBDI® and Whole Brain® Thinking.

Many of our Certified Practitioners have been with us from the early days and have many great whole brain memories.  We would love to hear your stories from your experiences with Herrmann over the years. Putting on the SCARF – David Rock review by Wayne Goodley (Director Herrmann New Zealand)

Last week I attended a presentation by David Rock to the NZATD Conference at Waipuna Lodge in Auckland.

We have previously referred to David’s work and his recent publication ‘Managing with the Brain in Mind’. The SCARF model is highly appropriate for any organisation seeking to optimise the potential and the capability of its people.

David reminded us of the very limited time we have for focused attention; on average, perhaps two hours of quality time a day. He suggests that the smart amongst us will make a conscious effort to create the appropriate environment for focused thinking. The best way to do this is to find a quiet space and clear your mind so you can more easily move to a positive place.

He stressed that in most workplaces today, we seek people who can create, prioritise, make decisions and avoid distraction. Do you see how easily you can use up your 2 hours in just the first of these activities? For most people those two hours of focused thought are unlikely to be in the office!

David reinforced the advice that such focused attention is very fragile and that the competition for time in your prefrontal cortex is fierce. This and similar aha’s came to me as he related his five years of research.  Any questions and doubts regarding the authenticity of his findings was tackled with humour and statistics and greeted by his audience with respect and awe.
